Wurz crashed at the end of the tunnel of lap forty-three, just after he had made a tyre stop. It was speculated that he may have done so because of damage sustained in an earlier incident with Michael Schumacher or he may have just been pushing too hard on cold tyres. Subsequent investigation showed theta the additional weight of the fuel taken at the pit stop but extra stress on a fracture in the suspension that had been cause in the Schumacher incident. Wurz had been lucky to escape the massive 170-mph impact intact.

For the second race in succession Hill was involved in a racing incident. On lap eleven he made a move on Alexander Wurz’s Benetton’s the entered the left hander at the end of the start finish straight. Hill clearly had won the corner but Wurz turned in on him. Both cars went off the track and rejoined. Wurz eventually finished seventh but Hill was only able to limp back to the pits with terminal suspension damage. Hill was angry, “I did not think it was very good driving from Alexander, as I had out braked him and won the corner and he kept coming over till we hit. Luck has not been on my side for the first two races but thing will get better.” Wurz was equally upset but he made no attempt to blame Hill “I experienced quite a lot of under steer and then Damon tried to overtake me and we had a collision. This affected my set-up and the car became more difficult to drive, and this was followed with a problem with the engine, it was not pulling properly.”

On lap five de la Rosa and Alex Wurz tangled whilst battling for seventeenth place. “Pedro was right in front of me, he slid wide, I tried to go past on the inside and we collided.” Wurz was philosophical, de la Rosa ha different ideas. “My car had been difficult to drive since I touched wheels with Trulli but I continued until I was rear-ended by Wurz, which I think was really unnecessary.”

Like Villeneuve, Wurz span off the track and into retirement on lap twenty-six. “The rain was coming down hard and I saw Villeneuve spin off in front of me on the straight so I dropped to half speed. But the car was really low and there was so much aqua planning – not from the wheels, but from the underside of the car – that I had no control and slid off on the straight.”

At the re-start Damon hill’s Jordan slowed dramatically in the first turn due to an electrical problem with his Jordan. Alex Wurz was right behind Hill and he had to swerve dramatically in order to avoid the Jordan. In doing so he collected the Sauber of Diniz, pitching it into a barrel role. (Wurz was eliminated there and then.) The Sauber slammed down on its rollover bar, skidding across the kerb and onto the grass, breaking the structure in the process. The safety car was deployed while the bruised but intact Diniz was extracted from the car. It was a lucky escape. “I had a good start, but when I came out of the first corner I had no power and could not get out of the way.” Explained Hill. “The ensuing accident was very nasty; I was it happen and there was nothing I could do. I was Pedro fly past me and was very worried as I was on the scene as they were tending to him. I am very relived to hear he is OK.”
