1 pts | Turning in on Irvine, eliminating them both. Irvine was on lap thirty when he tried to lap Alex Yoong. Yoong had been under pressure all weekend at his home race. Aspersions were being cast as to Yoong’s abilities in the car as well as his right to drive in Formula One. As Irvine dived up the inside of the Minardi, Yoong turned in on the Ulsterman. “That was a tough race – while it lasted! We had no choice but to push hard and that’s what I did. I was up to 9th place when I came up behind the Minardi of Alex Yoong. He was being given the blue flag and that was my cue to overtake. He moved over and as I went past, he cut right across my path and took the front wing off,” Eddie said. “I came into the pits and the team did an excellent job in replacing the front wing. I re-joined the race in 11th place and while the car was a challenge to drive, I felt we had a chance out there today. Our race pace was quicker than Jordan-Honda, Toyota and BAR-Honda. Then, just before the pit-stop, I lost hydraulic pressure and that meant that I couldn’t engage the clutch. We had no choice but to retire. Again, we’ve had a difficult weekend and I am now looking forward to making progress in Barcelona next week. With Niki and Guenther at the helm, I am very confident of finding a way forward. “Irvine’s Jaguar and the Minardi were both brutally savaged. Yoong was out of the race on the spot. Irvine’s R3 had lost its front wing and he pitted only to retire with a loss of hydraulic pressure, an artefact of the contact with Yoong. (Ironically he was due to pit at the end of the lap.) Yoong looked as if he was concentrating too hard and had not been using his mirrors. The only success he achieved all weekend was to furnish his critics with more ammunition. |

1 pts | Failure to qualify for the race. On his final run of the day, Yoong spun his Minardi as he battled a brake balance problem that had plagued him all day. Unable to improve on his time, he finished the session with a lap of 1’27″241. His best time four tenths out of the 107% rule and he would be destined to wait if to see if the stewards would reverse his DNQ and allow him to race. Given that he was so off the pace, it would prove an easy task for the stewards to keep him out of the race on the grounds of safety. “I was a bit handicapped at the outset by never having driven this circuit in the dry,” Yoong said. “I felt I had it sorted after the second 45-minute session this morning, but I underestimated the levels of grip available here in the dry with the car in qualifying trim. I’m particularly sorry for the guys, who worked really hard to get me in the race. It’s very disappointing.” |

4 pts | Spin in qualifying. Young’s qualifying session was not all it could have been. It was the Malaysian’s first time at the circuit and it showed in qualifying when he spun on his out lap. Yoong thought that without the failure he would not have been last on the grid at the end of the session. “I’m disappointed, as I felt we could have had a good result in qualifying today. The balance of the car was good, but the rear brakes were locking up at times, which destabilised the car going into corners,” Yoong explained. “We’re now going to make some changes and we expect the situation to be significantly improved for tomorrow.” |

1 pts | Crash at Ste Devote in qualifying, 2 points for style and 3 for speed. Yoong crashed his car at Ste Devote on his first flying lap in qualifying. Coming into his first fast lap of the day he broke at his normal spot for Ste Devote but he locked the brakes of his PS02. Instead of driving straight up into the escape road and saving the car he turned in to the corner and the car slid into the barriers, it’s suspension smashed. Yoong then had to take the spare car which was set up for Webber. “I braked at the same spot for Ste Devote as usual on that first run, but the track was slippery, I locked up and slid into the barrier,” Alex explained. “In hindsight, I should have gone down the escape road rather than try to make the corner, and that mistake really spoiled the session for me.“ |

1 pts | Sliding off at Casino, terminally damaging his car?s suspension. Young’s first venture around the principality was not all that it might have been. As a novice to the track Yoong had spent most of the weekends practice session in the barriers and seemly the script for his race had been written. Yoong pulled into the pits at the end of lap twenty-nine with terminally deranged suspension after he had slid into the armco at Casino. “We didn’t do many laps in the warm-up, so the first time I drove the car with heavy fuel was in the race, and we had quite a bit of understeer,” Alex said. “As the fuel load became lighter, the car was getting better, but then, after my pit stop, I ran over some debris at the Casino and hit the barriers as a result. A rear trackrod was damaged in the impact, and that was the end of my race. The boys have done a terrific job all weekend and I feel really sorry for not finishing my race today.” |

1 pts | 1 point for pit lane speeding and 5 for the subsequent drive through penalty. As Ralf Schumacher pitted on lap forty-four for an unscheduled stop after problem with his refuelling rig the race steward’s announced that both Nick Heildfeld and Alex Yoong would have to make another trip to the pits too. They were both required to take drive through penalties due to pit lane speeding. “It is obviously good to finish this Grand Prix. I haven’t finished a race for a while, so I’m definitely happy with today’s outcome,” Alex said. “It was quite a hard race for me, because I didn’t have the use of the drink bottle from the beginning. Otherwise, it was uneventful, with the exception of a problem I experienced engaging the pit-lane speed limiter. As a result, I received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. Generally, though, I’m quite happy with today’s outcome.” |

7 pts | Jumping the start, 8 points and 5 points for the subsequent drive through penalty. At the start of the race the inexperienced Malaysian driver jumped the start by an incredible amount. He tried to brake to cancel out the advantage he received but the drive-though penalty was inevitable. He came in at the end of lap seven to serve the penalty and rejoined the race in twentieth position. |

4 pts | Spinning as he entered the pitlane on lap thirty-one. On lap thirty-one Alex Yoong enter the pit-lane to make a scheduled stop for hot tyres and cool fuel. The trouble was that he was too fast on his entry into the pit lane and spun. He was able to recover with no ill effect but it was an embarrassing error. |

1 pts | Young?s failure to make the 107% time in qualifying. Yoong’s qualifying session turned into a nightmare when he failed to make the 107% cut off time. Although the team suggested his problems were due to a power steering the race stewards rejected the team’s appeal and Yoong was not allowed to take the race start for the second time in 2002. “I gave it my best shot today, but unfortunately, it wasn’t good enough. I’m obviously extremely disappointed to have missed making the grid for tomorrow’s race, particularly by such a small margin,” said a very disappointed Alex Yoong. “ Silverstone is a tough circuit, and with my relative lack of experience racing or testing here, it would have helped a lot if there had been the opportunity to run in the dry yesterday. There wasn’t, however, and the car was also suffering from some rear instability under braking today, which didn’t help matters. The biggest problem, though, was that we lost a lot of time in the quick corners, a factor that was due, at least in part, I believe, to the lack of power steering on the cars this weekend.” |

1 pts | Crash in FFP2, 1 point for style and 2 for speed. At the 2002 Italian Grand Prix, Malaysian, Alex Yoong was making a return to Grand Prix racing after a two-race break while he fine-tuned his qualifying skills. He started the race weekend in inauspicious fashion, when in Friday’s second practice session he tapped the barrier at the Ascari chicane with the rear of his Minardi. The Minardi bounced off the barrier and came to rest sideways across the track. Yoong had to abandon the PS02. |
