In a desperate attempt to qualify his Arrows Caffi took the route of trying a minimum down force set-up. This produced a number of frustrating spins for Capelli in the outdated chassis with the heavy Porsche engine. The final spin resulted in some reparable damage to the car.

On Saturday Mooring Practice Caffi clipped the left-hand armaco barrier going into the swimming pool section. The impact broke the front left suspension and the FA12 was rendered uncontrollable and it torpedoed into the following barrier on the right hand side of the track. The accident was sizable and the chassis was completely written off and Caffi took no further part in the event.

Suzuki and Caffi had been dicing for ninth place when their two cars touched. Suzuki was out on the spot. Caffi’s Arrows speared into the armaco barrier. The Italian driver was stuck in the car, his feet trapped. With the Footwork in such a dangerous position the race organisers had little option but to red flag the race after sixty-one laps. Caffi sustained mild ankle injuries but all agreed Lady Luck had been watching over him.
