The impact punctured one of the Benetton’s rear tyres and Verstappen speared into Morbidelli’s Footwork. All three were out on the first lap of the race.

He was slow to get back into the grove and on lap seventeen Zanardi was stuck behind him for a number of corners. Zanardi became frustrated and he tried an optimistic lung up the inside of Hill, which saw Hill punted into the gravel and out of the race. Zanardi was out in the same gravel trap too.

Zanardi, Alessandro (Lotus (Team)) Spin off and recover 1 pts Zanardi span his Lotus at the tight chicane that leads on to the start finish straight on lap fifty-four. The car only brushed the retaining wall lightly but the impact fractured a wishbone in the right hand suspension, which then punctured the gearbox casing. Zanardi tried to continue only for the rear of his car to be engulfed in flames, as the transmission fluid was set alight. He limped as far as Tamburello where he stopped for a dousing from the fire marshals.

He totally wrecked his Lotus in a high-speed accident in the famous Eau rogue complex. Zanardi lost control of his Lotus on a bump in the uphill left-hand bend. He slammed into the barrier and was then catapulted across the track and came to rest in the sand trap on the opposite side of the track. Waved yellow flags warned of the danger and Andretti slowed to a crawl. Senna arrived behind Andretti at high speed; braked hard to avoid the American and spun into the barrier only a couple of meters from where marshals were extracting the injured Zanardi from his Lotus. Zanardi survived the crash but he had a broken tooth and bruised nose. A precautionary brain scan revealed no problems. Zanardi sat out the rest of the weekend. The accident prompted a safety discussion due to the damage inflicted to the barrier by Zanardi’s Lotus.

Coming into Stowe in Friday qualifying he span in Minardi and had to abandon it as it became beached over kerb on the exit of the corner. With its rear wheel lifted of the ground the Minardi was going nowhere fast.

Morbidelli immediately fought back and the two cars touched. Zanardi continued unharmed but Morbidelli got on to the grass, spun off the track and then back on, only clobber his team mate’s car. Martini was not pleased at all; the left -rear wheel was torn of his sister Minardi. Giancarlo Minardi was not happy both cars out wit less than three laps to run.

On lap twenty-one he lost control of his Williams and plunged into the wall ripping the front suspension of his FW21. A clutch problem was partly responsible. The accident required the deployment of the safety car for the second time of the race. “I was quite a few seconds off the pace, just turned into a corner and lost the back end,” Zanardi explained. “I certainly had more problems this weekend than I thought I would have had.”

Zanardi baulked Coulthard as the Italian slowed and was livid, pulling out all the stops to attack Zanardi in the press. “ I don’t know what he was doing in the middle turn six, on-line and going slowly, but both I and the driver ahead of me had to run very wide, on to the marbles to overtake him. The he parked on the exit of the corner. Sometimes you have to expect to find idiots this way.”
