Nannini was leading the race when he pitted for slick tyres on lap fifteen. The pit stop was a painful 12.9 seconds and he rejoined the race well down the order. To compound his woes further he hit a groundhog on his out lap, puncturing one of the Benetton’s front tyres and damaging its front wing. He had to pit again for repairs dropping him to twenty- first place. Then finally he hit a puddle of water off the racing line and spun his Benetton firmly into the tyre barrier down an escape road midway around the track. He was out of the race on lap twenty-two.
