Nannini was leading the race when he pitted for slick tyres on lap fifteen. The pit stop was a painful 12.9 seconds and he rejoined the race well down the order. To compound his woes further he hit a groundhog on his out lap, puncturing one of the Benetton’s front tyres and damaging its front wing. He had to pit again for repairs dropping him to twenty- first place. Then finally he hit a puddle of water off the racing line and spun his Benetton firmly into the tyre barrier down an escape road midway around the track. He was out of the race on lap twenty-two.

Nannini made a total hash of a gear change in the Friday morning practice session. Due to this he dramatically over revved the ford HB engine. Thus he had to sit out Friday’s qualifying session whilst a fresh engine was installed in his Benetton B190 in time for Saturday.

As Benetton were saving the latest specification, Series IV Ford HB engines for the race they were running the cars as light as possible in Qualifying. Nannini fell victim to this running out of fuel at the end of Friday’s qualifying session.

Nannini punted Ricardo Patrese’s Williams from behind on lap sixteen. He spun his Benetton and stalled the Ford HB engine and was out of the race on the spot as push starts were now forbidden. Nannini concluded that Patrese had braked much earlier than normal on entry to Copse. Patrese had spun but rejoined, fighting back from twentieth to fifteen position. He continued for another nine laps but the damage that his William’s diffuser had sustained in the incident had left him very short on down force and he pulled into the pits to retire at the end of twenty-seven. This was not the way Patrese had envisioned ending his 199th Grand Prix.

Both Benetton drivers were running B compound tyres in the race. Piquet had picked a puncture up on the track and was heading into the pits. Nannini was worried that Piquet’s puncture was wear related so just as Piquet was pulling into the pit lane Nannini dived in front of him to get to the pits first. The result was that both Benettons arrived together, forcing Piquet to wait.
