The mid-race rain necessitated a change from slick to wet tyres. Alain missed his planned pit stop on lap twenty-eight and he had to go round for one more lap. The trouble was that he lost control of his Williams car on the extra lap. As he came down into the first corner of the lap the FW15 begin to aquaplane and Prost was powerless to prevent the car ramming Fittipaldi’s spun and stalled Minardi: both were out. The debris from the accident required that the safety car came out. The Brazilian crowds were quite pleased as you could imagine, seeing Senna‘s main rival eliminated. “I was on my way to the pits when I head my engineer, David Brown on the radio link. I did not understand what he was saying and I though I was being advised to continue for another lap because Damon was in the pits.” Explained Prost.

At his pit stop on lap forty-eight Prost stalled his Williams’s engine dragging out the pit stop to just over thirty seconds. It is no secret that Prost hated driving in the wet. Maybe he was giving his Williams team a hint that he wanted to retire when he stalled his car making his getaway from his first tyre stop (changing to slicks from wets.)

Prost jumped the start and had to serve a ten second stop / go penalty. He compounded the problem by stalling the engine on his Williams as he made his get away from the penalty! When he eventually re-joined he was a full lap down. “I think I did the perfect start. Sure the car moved a little bit on the grid but plenty of cars do that, “ argued Prost.

Prost was trying out Williams’s new computer controlled ABS anti-lock braking system in Friday free practice. Suddenly his Williams spun in a cloud of tyre smoke. This because the brakes had locked up due to a glitch in the software. His engine stalled he was out for the balance of the session, able to mull over the injustice that had occurred at the pervious race where a technical fault on Senna’s McLaren had the session red flagged. The McLaren team were allowed to recover the strickened MP4/8 but to rescue for Prost at Imola or at Magny Cours.

Prost had to serve a stop / go penalty for missing a chicane on the first lap as he avoided the spinning Ligier of Mark Blundell. He was none too pleased as her had taken to the escape road in order to avoid a collisions. “I was more than surprised by that penalty. In fact I think it is a scandal because we were talking about that chicane in this mornings driver’s briefing. Senna in particular was anxious to get the position clarified because last year Mansell went straight through the chicane, wasn’t penalised and gained sufficient momentum on the following straight to take the lead form Ayrton. I did not get any advantage. Really, I don’t think these people are capable of judging these things properly. I think they really called me in just to make the race more interesting,” commented a mortified Prost.

Prost had to start at the back of the grid as he stalled his Williams at the start of the parade lap. The harsh action of the Williams’s clutch caught Prost out yet aging. “I though I’d solved my problem but today it felt. Different somehow.” Prost remarked about the clutch behaviour.

Prost spun his FW15C into a barrier on his first quick lap in Saturday Qualifying. “Before I went off at that corner I couldn’t understand why everyone was seeming to go off there. The car just snapped into a sudden over steer and there was nothing I could do. Nobody’s fault but my own.”

The cars formed up on the dummy grid, all on slick tires and the heaven opened. Wets were rushed out from the garages to the grid and the organisers declared the race to be a wet race. The field set out on the parade lap in cautious fashion. As the field swept down through Rivazza suddenly Alain Prost lost control of his Ferrari and gently pirouetted across the grass, slinking toward the perimeter fence. Prost lost the engine and his race was over on the parade lap. He was obviously embarrassed and the Tifosi were screaming blue murder!

By lap thirty-eight Prost had become frustrated with Senna very defensive driving tactics and he decided he was going to try a “do or die” effort to get past the Brazilian. Sure as eggs are eggs Senna gave Prost no room and Prost was forced to go up the escape road. Disastrously for Prost he was unable to get his F643 into reverse gear and he was unable to rejoin the race and so he retired.

After the race Prost was very vocal about what he thought of Senna’s driving tactics. “He did everything to stop me passing him. He weaved around and some of his braking was, how can I say, unusual. That’s that last time he does something like that to me. I have no problem being on the same track as him but I will push him off if he tries that again.” Prost was also in uncharitable mood with regards to the Italian Press. In the past before races were televised Enzo Ferrari only found out about the performance of his cars through the press and the Italian press had developed a special relationship with Ferrari. Prost was refusing to take the blame for Ferrari’s shortcomings, something that the Italian Press was not overjoyed by.

Prost troubled relationship with Ferrari came to a close abruptly just prior to the start of he 1991 Australian Grand Prix. Prost was formally advised that he would not be driving for the team on the Friday after the Japanese Grand Prix. Claudio Lombardi, Ferrari team manager had the following to say; “ After deep analysis of Alain Prost’s behaviour during the present season, we had to take the decision. We are always prepared to consider constructive criticism as a team but Prost made too many critical comments outside the team.” It was an unfortunate set of circumstances but Prost was glad to be a free a agent. 1992 turned out to be a sabbatical year and he would return with vengeance in 1993.

A new rule introduced in time for the 1990 Mexican Grand prix prevented cars from being pushed started on the pain of exclusion. When Prost spun and stalled his Ferrari in Saturday qualifying he knew his session was over as the spare car was having a new engine fitted. All the drama resulted in him qualifying in thirteenth place, his lowest grid position since Detroit in 1983.
