On ending his last flying lap, Sutil ran wide on the last corner. The kerbs sponsored a spin down the main straight managing a 360 degree spin in a plume of blue smoke. Lap ruined!

In the evening following the Chinese Grand Prix, Sutil, it has been alledged, Sutil was involved in an incident with Genii Capital CEO Eric Lux in a nightclub in Shanghai, where he cut Lux in the neck with a champagne glass Sutil himself had broken. On 16 May 2011, Lux announced that he had filed a criminal complaint for for physical assault and grievous bodily harm against Sutil. Sutil himself apologised for the incident, which he described as unintentional.

Maldonado overtook Sutil on the inside into Tabac causing Sutil to run wide on the dirty part of the track. Sutil impacted with a glancing blow the barriers which instantly destroyed his right rear tyre.

Sutil limped on through the lap, but became the catalyst for the nest accident.

Sutil said about the incident: “It’s disappointing that we couldn’t fight for Q3, but the pace was not there today,” Sutil began. “I was bit unlucky on my last run in Q2, when Petrov wasn’t watching his mirrors and I had to abort one of my flying laps. I did another lap, but my tyres were going off by then and so I probably could have been a little bit higher up.”
