A disastrous start to the new season for the Stewart grand Prix team in its third and final year of competition. Both of its cars broke down on the gird, causing the race to be red flagged. Examination at a subsequent date showed that oil seals in both of the car’s engines had ruptured under pressure. This was attributed to the high ambient temperature that had not been encountered in testing. Barrichello took the restart in the only spare leaving Herbert to sit the rest of the weekend out.

Barrichello was excluded from the results of the race when it was discovered that the metal ballast on the underside of his Stewart was too low and was in danger of working it’s way loose. It was a bitter kick in the teeth for the Brazilian who had been overtaken by Hill in the closing stages of the race.
