4 pts | Massa?s suspension failure in qualifying. The yellow flags were being waved in qualifying after Massa had a right rear suspension failure and subsequent puncture. He fought to keep his Sauber under control, or get it into the gravel, depending on your perspective. Unfortunately for him, “something went wrong in the front right suspension on my first run, so I had to get a lift back to the pits to take over the spare car,” Massa explained. “That was set up for me, but it had a lot more understeer than my race car so I was struggling to get a good lap time. I think I got the best from it, but it’s disappointing.” |

1 pts | The brake failure on Heidfeld?s car that forced him out of the race. Nick Heidfeld race ended with a technical failure that all drivers fear, braking problems. “I made a good start this afternoon and my car felt fine to begin with, but I think I may have had a slow puncture on the right rear on my first set of tyres as Mika Salo was getting close,” Nick explained. “I had him under control, however, and after my first stop I had no trouble keeping ahead of him. Then after a while I began to feel some really strange vibrations in the front end so I had to make an unscheduled stop and then was forced to retire. It’s disappointing because I could have finished sixth today.” |

1 pts | The problem with the refuelling rig that saw Nick Heidfeld make an extra stop to take onboard the fuel which he was not given at his first pit-stop. On lap seventeen Nick Heidfeld pulled into the Sauber pits, the German driver stopping for fuel and tyres. The stop lasted for 17.9 seconds after a problem with the refuelling rig; no fuel was deployed into the car had Heidfeld had to drive around the track and stop again for fuel. This dropped him out of the four-way battle for seventh place, back to sixteenth. “I thought that the team had called me in on the radio for my first stop, but it turned out that they hadn’t. So when I arrived at the pits nothing was ready, and I had to come in again three laps later,” Heidfeld explained. “Then I got a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane. That was annoying, because I felt that the Renaults were holding us up in the early laps even though my car was oversteering quite a bit. It was better on a low fuel load, but with four stops, what can you do? Altogether, a frustrating afternoon.” |

1 pts | The brake failure that lead to Massa crashing out of the race at Ste Devote on lap sixty-four. Massa was eliminated from the race in a frightening accident on lap sixty-four. He flew straight on at Ste Devote as the result of what appeared to be a brake failure. He hit the wall up the escape road very hard, headfirst. The barriers and the controlled breakage of the chassis dissipated the impact and Felipe escaped uninjured, although quite shaken. He blamed brake failure but his wheels seemed to be full locked as he entered the corner. Interestingly his teammate, Nick Heildfeld suffered a similar incident at the last Grand prix, driver errors or a chink in Sauber’s armour? “I had a pretty exciting first Monaco Grand Prix. The car had lots of oversteer but I had a good battle with Bernoldi, which unfortunately ended when I braked a bit too late for the Ste Devote corner,” Massa explained. “We both went into the escape road and then I had to do a stop and go penalty. On my 64th lap nothing happened when I braked for Ste Devote, and the car just went straight on into the tyre wall. It was a big impact and I hit my nose on the steering wheel, but otherwise I’m okay. I’ll be leaving tomorrow for the Silverstone test.” |
