After his first pit stop the fuel valve on Diniz’s car stuck open and under hard braking the fuel spilled out of the tank and over the car. The fuel ignited as it came into with the hot engine cover. The blaze was alight for some twenty seconds but Diniz was out of the car quickly. The only injury he sustained was a minor burn to the hand. A subsequent inquiry by the FIA revealed that the valve had jammed open due to an incorrectly fitted “span ring” (holds the outer housing to the inner housing) that was unable to make contact with the valve. This problem had occurred even though the FIA had written to all of the teams at the end of the 1995 season to warn them of this exact problem.

Panis had to start from the back of the grid after his “parking brake” locked on at the start of the parade lap, delaying his getaway.

The team managed to get Pains in to the pits just in time to hold up Berger’s exit of his second pit stop costing him the lead to Hill. Ligier used Renault engines in 1994, as did Williams… Suspicious.
