Jordan Spin off and recover 1 pts When Eddie Irvine came in for his pit stop on lap twenty-one he was running in seventh place. As the re-fuelling nozzle was pulled from the car there was a fuel spillage that was ignited the second it touched the Jordan’s red-hot exhaust pipe. A fast reaction from Jordan’s mechanics as well as the Ligier mechanics soon arrested the blaze.

Jordan General Pit stop blunder 5 pts After the race Jordan launched an appeal against the Benetton team. With Barrichello finishing fourth he would have inherited third if Schumacher had been excluded from the results. Jordan protested over the way in which the front aerodynamic deflectors were attached to the monocoque just inside the Benetton’s front wheels. The rules stated that the underside of the F1 car had to lye on one plane from the rear of the front wheels to the front of the rear wheels. The fixing points of the Benetton’s deflectors fell within this area. Charley Whiting ruled that they were in fact on the perimeter of the area and were thus legal. After examining the video evidence from the lap thirty-six incident involving Irvine, Verstappen, Bernard and Brundle the race stewards judged Irvine to blame and imposed a $10,000 fine and a one-race ban. Jordan appealed and the reviewing board trebled the ban. “The board is satisfied that Mr Irvine caused an avoidable collision, forced Mr Verstappen’s car off the track and illegitimately prevented Jos Verstappen legitimate overtaking manoeuvre. It is the board’s decision that Mr Irvine failed to evaluate the situation in the way that he ought to have done and recklessly pulled out to overtake the car driven my Mr Bernard.” Luckily for Irvine that the board quashed is fine?

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts Sato?s Jordan?s gearbox glitch that cause him to crash in free practice.

In free Saturday free practice Takuma Sato had a massive accident that resulted in his race chassis being sidelined for the rest of the day, leaving him with only the spare car for qualifying. After a glitch in the gear-change software that saw the car go into third gear rather than fourth Sato lost control of his Jordan as its rear wheels lost traction, the car impacting heavily into the tyre barriers. The car sustained significant damage to its side pod.

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts Sato?s car stopping on the circuit in qualifying.

Jordan were left with only one car for both of its drivers in qualifying. In morning practice Takuma Sato’s chassis sustained serious damage when a glitch in the gear-change sent him flying off the track and into the tyre barriers. Sato started the qualifying session in the spare car but had to abandon it on the far side of the track, even before he could complete one run. “Today was a tough day,” Sato sighed. “I did my best and what happened was nobody’s fault. Mechanical problems do happen. It was very difficult to drive Giancarlo’s car in the wet. It was his seating position and, for example, I had no heel rest so I was pushing the pedals with my feet in the air! Also the car had a dry set-up.”

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts The gearbox problem that forced Sato to retire from the race.

Sato’s race ended on lap fifteen when an electrical problem with his Jordan’s gearbox forced him to pull off the track. “I was able to avoid the incident at the start – I just saw Ralf’s car in the air and then lots of smoke everywhere, but managed to steer clear of things as I was far enough behind,” Sato said. “After the restart I enjoyed a good battle with Pedro (De La Rosa), and then overtook him when the safety car came in. But then I had an electronics problem that meant I couldn’t select all the gears. The team called me in to the pits to try to fix the problem but, although I went out again, ultimately I had to retire. I seem to have gone through quite a lot this weekend, except a proper qualifying (!), so it has been a very exciting and interesting experience which I hope will set me up well for a better weekend in Malaysia.”

Jordan Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts Fisichella?s hydraulic failure in qualifying.

Fisichella was not in a positive frame of mind after problems in qualifying. Out on the track his Jordan ground to a halt with a hydraulic failure. Fisichella rushed back to the pits top take the spare.

“Clearly a disappointing qualifying session, especially here in Italy and after yesterday’s encouraging performance. The situation is simply that we are on the limit of our performance, although I believe I would have qualified higher had I not had the hydraulic problems with my racecar,” Fisichella said. “When I took the T car out it did not feel as good as my car. I hope to have a better day tomorrow and finish the race, if possible in the points.”

Jordan Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts The gearbox failure in Sato?s car on lap 6.

Jordan’s continuing reliability woes struck again at the 2002 San Marino Grand Prix. On lap six Takuma Sato came into the pits with gearbox problems. After a very long stop he rejoined the track but he was clearly not at racing speed. He soon pulled off the track and retired from his first San Marino Grand Prix, his car’s gearbox problem was terminal.

“A disappointing end to the weekend,” Sato sighed. “I was on my fourth lap with everything working fine until then, when suddenly I felt a problem with the gear which left me stuck in first gear. I made it back to the pits and the team tried to set the electrics, but the same problem re-occurred as soon as I went out so I had to pull over and retire from the race.”

Jordan Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts The Hydraulic pressure loss in Fisichella?s car that saw him retire from the race on lap 21.

On lap twenty-one the sixty-two laps remaining, Giancarlo Fisichella was forced to retire his Jordan from the race. With falling hydraulic pressure Fisichella had no option but to pull his car off the circuit, into retirement from the race.
“The problem was the hydraulic pressure,” Fisichella explained. “Unfortunately the start was good but as I was trying to go up the inside Heinz-Harald Frentzen cut me off and I went onto the gravel.”

Jordan Dunce 1 pts The hydraulic leak on Fisichella?s car that put him out of the race.

At the end of lap five Giancarlo Fisichella brought his Jordan into the pits to retire it from the race after the car had developed a hydraulic problem. This was a loss of pressure in the system, the same failure the car had experienced at the lap Grand Prix at San Marino.

“Not a good day!” Fisichella said. “I had a loss of hydraulic pressure which meant I could not change gears. I am very disappointed as I haven’t been able to finish any races because of various problems and it is clear we are not competitive enough. I hope to improve things for the future.”

1 pts Sato?s many and varied car difficulties in Friday Practice.

Although there were no major changes to the car for the 2002 Canadian Grand Prix Jordan were experiencing somewhat of a renaissance. This could not be said of Sato who was crippled on the first day of practice. Sato started with the wrong set-up, losing ten minutes or so while this was corrected. Then, his car had electronic problems, brake troubles and finally a broken exhaust.

“It was difficult day for me. I had a late start due to trouble with our initial set-up, which took nearly 10 minutes to fix. Then we had problems with the electrical systems which spoilt my first session although we were able to carry out back-to-back brake tests for the race, which gave us some positive data,” Sato explained.

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts The electronics problems experienced by Sato during Friday?s Free Practice sessions.

Sato was one of a clutch of drivers who was experienced car problems in Friday free Practice. The Japanese driver stopped out on the circuit after his electronics shut down ten minutes before the end of the first hour and then lost ten minutes of the second hour while it was being rectified.

“We were in good shape early on but near the end of the session I lost all power and had to stop on the track, probably at the furthest point from the pit lane. The last ten minutes of the first session were lost while I got back to the garage and also I lost the first ten minutes of the second session while the team finished the repairs,” Sato said.

Jordan Stall on grid 7 pts Sato?s car?s loose nose box in qualifying.

Sato’s second run in qualifying was spoiled when his nose/front wing came loose, but he was quite happy with his final qualifying time that put him in fifteenth place on the grid.

“It was a tough qualifying for the team. I had a problem with the nose on my second run and the team is investigating the reason,” he said. “My first run wasn’t bad but then the car had a lot of nervousness in high speed corners. The track temperatures were rising all the time and the tyres were graining, so I lost grip and couldn’t improve on my time. I think I did a 100% job but another tenth could have put me a couple of places higher.”

Trulli had been troubled with personal problems all through the first practice sessions for the 2002 German Grand Prix. To add to his woes the Renault team was struggling to find a good set-up for either driver so it came as no surprise when Trulli punctuated Saturday’s second practice session with a spin at the hairpin.

Jordan Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Seeking Prost TV money back off Minardi

At the 2002 Japanese Grand Prix Minardi team principal, Paul Stoddart threatened
to walk away from Formula One after a consortium of four teams, lead by McLaren
informed him in the paddock that they were taking him to arbitration to recover
the early fought over television funds. The Australian was paid the monies originally
intended for Prost earlier in the season after coming to an amicable agreement
with Bernie Ecclestone.

Stoddart fully believed he was entitled to the funds and Bernie Ecclestone
agreed. Ron Dennis, Eddie Jordan, Dave Richards and Frank Williams have other
ideas and want the cash distributed evenly. According to Stoddart, this action
will kill his minnow team, as he cannot afford a $2,000,000 fee to fight the matter
in court.

"I will turn my back on Formula One if this travesty of injustice is
allowed to proceed,"
Stoddart said. "I cannot afford four months
of my time nor the $2 million of costs that it will take to fund a challenge to
this. I have circulated a document to them (other teams) from Bernie’s solicitors
to me putting me on notice that they have now received the papers for this to
go to arbitration. At this time, with all the problems Formula One really does
have, for this to happen for me is nothing short of self-destruction."

"In the last 12 months we have been through so many problems, the sport
as a whole, and we’ve lost two teams. Now we are going to lose three, as I can’t
afford to fight this. Maybe there’s another one that’s not so steady as well.
Do they really want eight teams in Melbourne next year? I have gone through hell
and back again this year and this is the icing on the cake. It’s bad enough having
to deal with the problems I have had to deal with, but when you get knives in
your back from your co-team principals, I’m not interested. It’s a case of ‘Is
this the straw that breaks the camel’s back, do I want to be involved in a sport
with such individuals in it?’ I’m not sure that I do."

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts Fisichella’s stuck refuelling flap

There was a sense of panic in the Jordan garage when Fisichella pitted from fourth place on lap thirty-three. The Jordan’s fuel flap was stuck and Fisichella lost valuable time while the team removed it to refuel the car. He might no have panicked so much if he had known that he would soon succumb to a gearshift problem.

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts Fisichella’s gearshift problem and retirement on lap 53

Fisichella’s endurance battle failed at the end of lap fifty-three when he wrestled
his limping EJ13 back to the Jordan Garage. A faulty gearshift was to blame and
as the situation was hopeless, he reluctantly drove back to the pits to retire
from the race. Until then, he had given a sterling performance, one which saw
him rise to fourth prior to his second pit stop, when the fuel cap remained stuck
in the closed position, forcing the team to remove it entirely in order to refuel.

"Well, lots of things happened in the race. First of all I lost three
or four positions at Turn 6 on lap 1 when I lost the car a little under braking,"
the Italian explained. "Then when Ralph had his accident bits of debris
hit my car smashing off the wing mirror and damaging my rear wing. After that
I was running at a good pace but we had the problem on the pit stop with the fuel
cover and then at the end of the race the car had some gear problem."

Jordan Dunce 1 pts Firman’s fuel delivery + electronics problems during his lap 22 pit stop

Ralph Firman delivered a strong drive in the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix to earn
his first Formula One finish. He eventually brought the car home in eleventh put
it could have been so much more.

During his single pit stop, (which was delayed by a pit launch problem,) the
planned volume of fuel was not completely delivered. The resulting low fuel level
compromised his second stint, which had offered a ninth place finish and as a
result he lost a place on the last lap.

"It was a good race with the car showing reliability," he
said. "It was very very hard work but I had some good battles and it’s
great to finish. In the pit stop the car wouldn’t pull away with the normal system,
I don’t know why, but we did a manual start and that was okay, but I lost a bit
of time and it is a shame I ran out of fuel on the last lap. The team has done
an excellent job this weekend and I’m looking forward to Brazil."

Race
Jordan Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts Firman’s lap-18 suspension failure that caused him to spin and take Panis out: the safety cat had to be called out due to the large amount of debris on the track

Coming down the start finish straight to complete the seventeenth lap, Formula
1 Rookie, Ralf Firman was pursuing his teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella and the
Toyota of Olivier Panis. As he approached the critical braking area before turn
one his EJ13′s right front suspension disintegrated.

The right front wheel with its associated suspension sheered off the car and
dragged along by its tether, nearly taking the rookie’s head off. Firman battled
to keep control of the tri-wheeled car but the task proved insurmountable. With
a lack of left side grip, the rear of the car pitched turned to the right pitching
the car in to a spin, collecting Panis’ TF103 in an explosion of debris. Both
cars were out of the race and given that the debris littered the track, the safety
car had to leave it garage, triggering a flurry of pit-lane activity.

"I had another suspension failure," he said. "It’s
a shame and of course I’m extremely disappointed. Fisi did a rally good job finishing
second and getting the team some points."

Jordan Spin out of session / race 4 pts Firman’s clutch failure that forced his engine to fail on lap 52

Ralf Firman’s disastrous weekend may have produced a satisfactory result if the
race stopped, twelve laps early on lap fifty-one. After a torrid time in qualifying
Firman started his race form the pit lane and kept his nose clean running with
teammate, Fisichella.

On the fifty-second lap, the Jordan’s engine cried "enough" and there
was little the Englishman could do except pull of the track and retire from the
race.

Ralph said. "Later I had a clutch problem and after a couple of laps
the engine just packed up. I’m looking forward to the Silverstone test next week,
as the time in the car will be a great help to me. I think I still need to improve
myself in qualifying but in the race I always seem to do a reasonably good lap
time."

Jordan Mouthing off 5 pts

The engine and fuel pump problems that resulted in Fisichella using the spare car in Saturday?s qualifying session and as a result running a different strategy in the race

Giancarlo finished in a lowly seventeenth position in Saturday?s qualifying session, two places below his inexperienced teammate, Ralph Firman.

To give the Italian some credit: his efforts had been seriously blunted after a series of technical drams resulted in missing the warm-up and then being forced to use the spare Jordan which had been set up for Firman.

“This has been a really frustrating weekend for me,” he said. “There was an engine problem with my race car which meant that the engine had to come off the T-car. Then there was a problem with the fuel pump and so the engine had to come off the race car again and go back on the T-car. This was set up for Ralph and I had not driven it at all. Because it was all done at the last minute because I am running a different fuel strategy than planned.”

Fisichella?s pit stop on lap on lap twenty-two was delayed by a problem with the Intertechnique fuel rig. The mechanics had a struggle to get the appliance to dock with the car but after what seemed to be an eternity, the hose fell into place and the fuel was deployed.
