British Americian Racing Exhaust problem 5 pts Five days before the start of the 1999 Australian Grand Prix BAR were appearing before the World Motor Sport Council. BAR were answering charges that its managements were in breach of the regulating by lodging a complaint about the governing body to the European commission. BAR had wanted to run each of the teams two cars in a different liveries, one a “555” car and the other a “Lucky Strike” car. The rules stated that cars from any team had to be run in substantially the same livery and BAR’s two proposed liveries were totally different. BAR’s lawyers had acted without the knowledge of team boss Craig Pollack. The protest to the European commission that the team was being denied commercials freedom. BAR were let off with no punishment provided they wrote a letter to all parties involved disassociating themselves from the actions of their lawyers. “We are pleased that the matter in now concluded,” said Pollack. “I have apologised to the World Motor Sport Council for my misunderstanding concerning our actions and the team can now focus on its preparations for the next grand Prix in Brazil.”

British Americian Racing Spin out of session / race 4 pts The rear wing failure that cause Jacques Villeneuve to crash out of the race.

Jacques Villeneuve’s race came to a frightening conclusion on lap twenty-seven when his BAR shed its rear wing. Villeneuve was unable to regain control of the car before it hit the barriers; terminally damaging it’s suspension. “Today has been a real missed opportunity,” said David Richards, Team Principal. “After the elimination of half the field we had something to play for. The end result is in itself very disappointing and even prior to his retirement we did not do a good enough job on Jacques’ car. It clearly crystallises in my mind just how much work there is to do in the team.”

British Americian Racing Spin out of session / race 4 pts Panis?s clutch problem in the race that saw him retire.

Panis was out of the race on lap eleven when his BAR failed him and he coasted to a halt on the grass. (BAR, 5 points.) The marshals, who pulled the car through a gate in the fencing, quickly recovered the situation. I made a fantastic start and was behind Jacques after the first corner. I was on the same strategy as him and I think if I had finished the race we could have brought both cars home in the top 10,” he said. “Unfortunately, I had the same clutch bearing problem as this morning and I had to stop. We have to keep our focus now and continue to work hard for Brazil. That is certainly my intention when we test next week in Barcelona.”

British Americian Racing Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts The gearbox problem on Villeneuve?s car that saw him lose time at his pitstop.

Villeneuve lost precious time at his pit stop when he failed to find a gear in his car.

British Americian Racing Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts The gearbox failure on Panis? car that forced him to retire from the race.

Panis chalked up his third straight retirement when a gearbox problem in his BAR04 caused him to stop out on the track on lap twenty-six.

“We thought we had solved the reliability problems but obviously not because today I had gearbox failure. I don’t know if I could have finished in the points but if you don’t finish you don’t get to find out. We really have to work hard on our reliability in testing next week before we can hope to move forward,” he said. “If we can finish a race, we can at least take advantage of opportunities. I haven’t finished the first three races now and that’s obviously not good, but I would like to think that I’ve had my run of bad luck now and the next few races can bring me better things.”

British Americian Racing Crash due to technical failure level 1 1 pts The throttle problem with Panis? car that forced him to retire from the race.

Panis’ race was over on lap forty-four when he was forced to retire his BAR04 from the race after it had developed a problem with its throttle linkage.

“Despite a relatively problem-free weekend we didn’t achieve a consistent balance on my car, which is something we will have to work on,” Panis said. “I was hoping to at least finish the race today in order to bring the team some valuable data, but unfortunately the throttle linkage problem cut the engine on my forty-fourth lap.”

British Americian Racing Dunce 1 pts The broken exhaust on Panis?s? car that forced him to retire from the race.

Olivier Panis had started all of the first four races of the 2002 season and failed to finish any. This was a trend that continued at the Spanish Grand Prix. After Panis stopped for fuel and tyres on lap forty-three be accelerated out of the pit-lane but the car lost drive due to an exhaust failure. Panis coasted to a halt on the grass by the side of the track, his race had been run.

“I’m disappointed that we missed a big opportunity to score one or two points today but I’m very pleased with the team because they did a great job this weekend. I made a very good start and the pitstop strategy and execution were brilliant,” Panis said. “After the first stop I rejoined the race ahead of Frentzen and I was able to keep him behind me without difficulty before an exhaust failure ended my race. We seem to have reduced our reliability problems to a minimum but we still need to keep pushing to keep on top of them. When points opportunities come our way we need to be in a position to take advantage of them. I’m looking forward to testing in Estoril next week and to the next race in Austria as I’m hungry for a good result.”

2002 – Monaco Grand Prix

British Americian Racing Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Villeneuve?s clutch problem at the start of the race.

Jacques Villeneuve suffered a torrid weekend at the 2002 Monaco Grand Prix. He had been off the pace all weekend and things were not set to improve for the race. As the five red lights extinguished to signal the start of the race Villeneuve’s car failed to get off the line due to a “clutch problem.” His mechanics rushed on to the track and pushed the car to the pits to start its engine. The mechanics were successful and Villeneuve joined the race, albeit a lap down on the leaders.

“We had a problem with the clutch at the start and lost everything because of that. By the time we started the car I was obviously a lap down, but only half the cars finished the race today so you have to be there and keep pushing,” Jacques said. “It was a shame because we had a strategy to pit very late and even with all the fuel we had on board we were doing very competitive lap times. The tyres were also holding up very well so we could have had a good race, but the car suddenly developed a problem and I had to pull over. Good luck hasn’t been on our side again here so we have to hope for better things in Canada.”

British Americian Racing Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts The clutch failure that lead to Villeneuve retirement from the race on lap forty-four.

Jacques Villeneuve’s Monaco nightmare was brought to an early conclusion on lap forty-four when he pulled his BAR along side the Armco in the run-up to Ste Devote to retire from the race.

British Americian Racing Breach of technical regulations
1 pts The gearbox problem in qualifying that caused Jacques Villeneuve to spin off as he exited the pitlane to make his final qualifying run.

Jacques Villeneuve was cheated out of his final qualifying run in front of his home crowd. He spun off with suspected gearbox problems while exiting the pit lane late in the session.
“We managed to improve the car overnight and that gave us an acceptable qualifying today, so I’m quite happy. It was too bad that we had an engine problem on the last run because we timed it just right before the rain came and could have improved the lap. I think we’re in a position to fight in the race tomorrow and hopefully get a point. We’re not quick enough down the straights but we’re in a good position overall.”

British Americian Racing Breach of technical regulations
1 pts 5 points for Villeneuve?s oil leak that caused his engine failure and 4 for the resulting safety car.

On lap nine Villeneuve was eliminated form his home race in disappointing style. Exiting the Old Pits hairpin the new specification Honda engine in his BAR004 blew due to fading oil pressure and and Villeneuve was left to cost to a halt against the retaining wall on the back straight. There was no safe place to park and Villeneuve was forced to leave the BAR in a dangerous position. After another four laps the stewards decided to deploy the safety car to allow the safe recovery of Villeneuve’s crippled steed.

“Obviously I’m disappointed not to finish my home Grand Prix again, especially just 8 laps into the race,” Jacques said. “We were running heavy for a one- stop strategy so I lost places at the beginning. Then we had the first signs of a loss of oil pressure and a couple of laps later the engine stopped. It’s frustrating to have such a bad race after the improvement we saw in qualifying.”

British Americian Racing Stall on grid 7 pts The technical problem that caused Panis to stop in the pit-lane as he commenced his recognition lap before forming up on the pre-grid.

Before the star of the race Olivier Panis’s BAR stopped as he exited the pit-lane with a technical problem. He pushed the car back into the pits where the mechanics were able to resolve the problem.

British Americian Racing Receiving Black Flag 10 pts Panis gearbox problem in FFP2.

Panis had a strong start to Friday practice but he lost forty-minutes of the second
session when his BAR004 developed a gearbox problem. The Frenchman reported that
he was happy with the handling balance but did not have sufficient time to scrub
in his tyres.

"It was a real shame that we had a gearbox problem in the second session
because I was quite confident that I could have continued to improve,"

Panis explained. "I had only done 3 laps so I lost most of the afternoon
and didn’t get the chance to do a back-to-back with the second tyre. Of course,
we have Jacques’ data to look at but every driver prefers to do his own, back-to-back."

British Americian Racing Crash due to driver error level 1 1 pts Seeking Prost TV money back off Minardi

At the 2002 Japanese Grand Prix Minardi team principal, Paul Stoddart threatened
to walk away from Formula One after a consortium of four teams, lead by McLaren
informed him in the paddock that they were taking him to arbitration to recover
the early fought over television funds. The Australian was paid the monies originally
intended for Prost earlier in the season after coming to an amicable agreement
with Bernie Ecclestone.

Stoddart fully believed he was entitled to the funds and Bernie Ecclestone
agreed. Ron Dennis, Eddie Jordan, Dave Richards and Frank Williams have other
ideas and want the cash distributed evenly. According to Stoddart, this action
will kill his minnow team, as he cannot afford a $2,000,000 fee to fight the matter
in court.

"I will turn my back on Formula One if this travesty of injustice is
allowed to proceed,"
Stoddart said. "I cannot afford four months
of my time nor the $2 million of costs that it will take to fund a challenge to
this. I have circulated a document to them (other teams) from Bernie’s solicitors
to me putting me on notice that they have now received the papers for this to
go to arbitration. At this time, with all the problems Formula One really does
have, for this to happen for me is nothing short of self-destruction."

"In the last 12 months we have been through so many problems, the sport
as a whole, and we’ve lost two teams. Now we are going to lose three, as I can’t
afford to fight this. Maybe there’s another one that’s not so steady as well.
Do they really want eight teams in Melbourne next year? I have gone through hell
and back again this year and this is the icing on the cake. It’s bad enough having
to deal with the problems I have had to deal with, but when you get knives in
your back from your co-team principals, I’m not interested. It’s a case of ‘Is
this the straw that breaks the camel’s back, do I want to be involved in a sport
with such individuals in it?’ I’m not sure that I do."

British Americian Racing Spin out of session / race 4 pts Largely copying Williams’ FW-24

In 2002 BAR recruited Williams’ chief areodyamacist Geoff Willis, so it was hardly “earth-shattering” news to find out the car that he had penned for the Brackley based team bore more than a passing resemblance to the 2002 Williams contender.

British Americian Racing Dunce 1 pts Villeneuve’s electronic problem that broke his car’s gear box

The 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix would turn out to be "one to forget" for
Jacques Villeneuve. In the Thursday press conference he forced the media’s attention
on to himself with an attack on his teammate and then after a differential problem
in the first practice session was back footed for the entire weekend in the media’s
stare. Being out qualified by Button was not in Villeneuve’s game plan but things
were to go from bad to worse for the French-Canadian.

Villeneuve was unable to start the race due to an electrical problem that damaged
his gearbox at the start of the parade lap. The 2001 F1 Rogues Champion was disappointed
not to have been given the opportunity to thrash Button as he had planned.

"A big disappointment as we concentrated all weekend on the race set-up
and fuel strategy,"
he said. "We didn’t look too good in qualifying
but we were confident for the race. We couldn’t show it though because of an electrical
problem from the start. Bad luck, but that’s life."

Race
British Americian Racing Spin out of session / race 4 pts Villeneuve’s hydraulic failure that ended his race on lap 19

Jacques Villeneuve pitted form seventh place on lap eighteen but his race would
not last much longer. At the end of his out-lap, the French Canadian’s BAR05 developed
a hydraulic failure and the car began to coast. Villeneuve had no choice other
than selecting the spot where to park his limping stallion, eventually selecting
a patch of grass just beyond the pit lane exit.

As Villeneuve directed his car to it’s final resting-place, Pizzonia was exiting
the pits and was fortunate not to collect the dawdling BAR.

"It’s very disappointing not to finish the race here because things
were looking good for us today,"
he said. "I had a problem changing
down and then the engine stopped shortly after. "

British Americian Racing Mouthing off 5 pts Jacques Villeneuve?s electrical fire that forced him to retire on lap 13

For the second Grand prix in succession Jacques Villeneuve was forced to retire form a strong position after his BAR05 developed an electric fire

Villeneuve had not been winning the upper hand with his teammate Button. Jenson was the interloper in the team the French Canadian had help build and Jacques was not too pleased that it appeared that Button was receiving a more reliable car on a regular basis. (Villeneuve?s fury was tempered by the fact that he had looked slow in qualifying due to running a heavier fuel load and he had been robbed of the chance to show his true pace.)

“What can I say? I was very optimistic because I was running more fuel than Jenson. He was three-stopping and I was on two, but I was right behind him after the safety car. The race was going really well and we were genuinely fighting to be in the top there,” Jacques explained. “I was running the same strategy as Barrichello and would have come into the pits at the same time. We could have had a good battle with Montoya. It’s a little bit frustrating now because it’s been the same story race after race. It’s a shame that we spend the weekend working on race strategy and set-up, and we compromise our qualifying position to give us the best shot at the race. Then we can’t even make use of that work because we don’t finish on Sunday.”
