Benetton Mouthing off 5 pts Using a device called a “parking brake” for the first time in the race, both Alesi and Berger had problems with the system that saw them both drop a huge number of places at the start of the race. (The system was supposed to stop the cars rolling on the grid, to prevent them triggering the jump start sensors.)

Benetton Off the track 1 pts Benetton complained about the legality of the William’s front wing endplates after the Grand Prix. It was thought that they were put up to it by Ferrari after Williams had pointed out Ferrari’s illegal barge boards to the race stewards at the previous race in France.

Benetton Unsportsman like driving 3 pts Thirty minutes before the start of the race, the stewards formally advised Williams and Benetton that the fuel samples taken from David Coulthard’s Williams and Michael Schumacher’s Benetton were irregular. (They differed to the samples that the teams had to submit prior to the race.) Thus, the two drivers had to compete in the race “provisionally” and the teams were to be fined $300,000 each. Nether team told its driver. It transpired that the fuel supplied by Elf was not illegal but it was irregular. The drivers kept there points from the race but the teams were not awarded the points for the Constructors Championship.

Benetton General Pit stop blunder 5 pts A malfunctioning valve in Schumacher re-fuelling rig resulted in Schumacher being short filled by some fifteen litres at his first pit-stop. This effectively destroyed his race strategy. “The problem put us out of synchronisation with our stops” Schumacher explained, “I came back in just a few laps later and we ad to put in a lot more fuel, plus we had to run a lot longer on the tyres which was not the quickest way.” When Benetton were attempting to repair Schumacher’s refuelling rig they spilt fuel all over the pit lane. Williams were the first team to point out the serious danger to the race stewards.

Benetton Electronics problem 4 pts In the build up the Spanish Grand Prix Benetton boss, Flavio Briatore was openly venomous about the manner in which the FIA had implemented the changes to the rules in the wake of Senna’s death. In a long letter to Mosley he accused the FIA of making ill-judged, snap decisions. He was not happy that his drivers would have to take part in the Spanish race in cars that had not been fully tested. Several teams were facing structural failures due to the modifications they were being forced to implement. Pedro Lamy had suffered a huge testing accident at Silverstone due to a wing mounting failure, caused by the rule changes pushing components out of the spectrum in which they had been designed to operate. Mosley rejected the contention and told teams they could miss one race without incurring a fine if they were worried about the engineering of their cars. The race officials demanded evidence that the B194s were safe to race.

Benetton Mouthing off 5 pts After the race Benetton claimed that the confusion over Schumacher penalty had arisen because they had assumed his five-second penalty was a time penalty that would be added to his finishing time rather than a stop-go penalty. The race Organisers fined Benetton $25,000 for “not having a full knowledge and understanding of F1 rules and their need for meticulous application.”

Benetton Mouthing off 5 pts At the end of lap fifteen Verstappen came in from fifth place for what should have been a normal refuelling stop. A malfunction in the fuel rig meant that the fuel continued to flow after the refuelling nozzle had been pulled from the car. Fuel poured over Verstappen’s Benetton and every one held their breath. What seemed like an eternally passed before the fuel was ignited as it came into contact with the hot exhaust pipes. The car was engulfed in a horrific fireball, the mechanics scattering and Verstappen reminded in the car waving his hands to alter the mechanics of the danger. It was the scenario that every one in Formula One had been dreading, thankfully the fireball ball was extinguished almost immediately and the only injuries sustained by the mechanics and Verstappen were minor burns.

Benetton Fuel line problem 4 pts Schumacher had is Friday times disallowed when it transpired that he had been using an “evaluation” set of tyres. The use of such tyres is prohibited and the race stewards were left with little choice in the matter but to strip Schumacher of his times. But on Saturday morning after further investigation the stewards re-instated his times after Goodyear made it known that the mistake was Goodyear’s and not Benetton’s. Ron Dennis was adamant that Benetton’s were at fault. After this incident Goodyear stopped taking evaluation tyres to races.

 
Benetton Fuel line problem 4 pts Senna arrived at Imola form Brazil by private jet at the last minute. This was probably part of his tactics in his contact negotiations with Ron Dennis. Flavio Briatore phone Max Mosley to recommend that Senna was pulled out of the race as he was in an unfit state to drive due to jetlag. Briatore implying he was a danger to the other drivers.
