Kubica does not break leg after all

Despite hitting the all at over 150 MPH, Robert Kubica did not break his leg as had been initially reported after the end of last Sunday's Canadian GP. Instead Kubica has a badly sprained ankle and bruising.

Kubica and BMW are hoping he will be fit to race an Indy where there are just as many walls passing at higher speed. F1Rogues believes that Ralf Schumacher should get in touch as he seems to be the most experianced at stuffing it into the wall at Indy.

Canada 2007: Kubica's crash

One of the pace cars from the Canadian Grand Prix was for Robert Kubica. For your viewing pleasure here is his crash...

Losing his front wing on the rear of Trulli's Toyota, Kubica is sent off the track, clipping a wall on the right hand side before plunging head first into a wall. Ending up past the final hairpin Kubica was avoided by all the other drivers while barrel rolling down the track.

Canada 2007: Black flags and broken legs…

After the last race being as dull as watching paint dry the Canadian Grand Prix proved to by so full of action there is almost no way we could write it all up.

The Safety Car was put to good use in Canada with four trips out of the garage to keep control of the drivers who were bent on rogue behavior.

The first outing for the Safety Car was the most disappointing. Sutil managed to hit the wall in the first chicane and ended up parking his car in a bit of a bad spot. You would think that in these days of ultra safe F1 tracks we would not have bad spots but luckily we still do. A small fire kept the marshals busy whilst they waited for recovery of the, now white coloured, Spyker. After a paltry 3 laps the Safety Car went back in.

Only a single lap after the Safety Car had gone back in, it was off again. Kubica had a horror smash when trying to overtake Trulli’s Toyota. On the run op to the final hairpin Kubica attempted to pass Trulli on the right but clipped part of his front wing on the Toyota. The resulting lack of downforce sent Kubica off the track. He first impacted a small wall with the front right of his car and then followed up with an almost front on impact with the wall. Thrown back out on to the track he slid toward the hairpin, rolled and ended up against the barrier past the corner. Looking rather motionless Doctor’s rushed to the scene to extract Kubica from the car. Kubica’s reward for the spread of carbon fibre all over the road was a broken leg. Six laps the Safety car was back in and the race resumed.

Sutil’s teammate Albers provided the next excuse for the Safety Car to go out. Missing a chicane is always bad but to do it and leave bits of your car everywhere is a very bad thing to do. Safety Car again so the marshals are safe to clean up.

Last trip for the Safety Car would be for Liuzzi. Liuzzi, already having hit the
”Wall of Champions” once, decided that enough was enough and the only way to go was to bury it good and proper. A small 2 laps after the Safety Car had gone in for Albers and it was back out to let Liuzzi get off the road.

When ever the Safety Car comes out, the pit lane closes. During this period you may not either enter or exit the pit lane. Massa and Fisichella forgot this. They exiting the pitlane despite the pit lane being lane closed. Breaking such rules is not for the faint hearted and for the first time since Michael Schumacher tried one over on Damon Hill the FIA issued not one, but two black flags.

Alonso was keeping a low, but erratic profile during all this mess. The current World Champion had almost manage to remove his team mate - who won his first race – on the first lap at the first corner. Not content with the move, Alonso tried and tried again to mess his race up at that very same corner, but every time could not quite manage it – he just added time to his lap. Add to that a ten second stop and go penalty and the humiliation of being overtaken by Sato on the last but one lap; it is amazing that he actually continued to race.
